NOVA Parks welcome your help in clipping and uprooting invasive vines that are threatening trees. You may work singly or lead a group. It is important that you already know about the invasives or are with a knowledgeable group leader who can help facilitate some of the invasive removal. The staff may be able to provide some support in terms of supplies such as bags but do not have the resources to directly assist.

Due to state restrictions, only certified park employees and qualified contractors are permitted to use herbicide on park land.  Also, for the safety of both the volunteers and our patrons, only manual tools such as hand pruners, shears and loppers are allowed.

Sign up here to arrange to volunteer as an individual.

Notify the staff if you are planning a group event.

Make sure a safety briefing is done with any kids, so they understand that the W&OD Trail in many ways is like a mini highway. They must be careful and just pay attention to folks cruising down the paved path as they can get to some high speeds at times.

SAFETY TIPS for the W&OD trail:

For your safety and the safety of our many park visitors, please adhere to the following procedures.

  • Always work clear of trail user traffic. Only walk on shoulders while performing trail work.
  • Watch for trail users when crossing the trail.
  • Wear light colored clothing to be more visible.
  • Wear hard sole shoes and work gloves.
  • Work only in daylight and fair weather.
  • Do not overexert yourself. Take breaks and drink ample fluids.
  • Stay alert for snakes, other wildlife, and noxious weeds, and avoid all contact.
  • Do not pick up materials that appear to be hazardous. Notify your local police, the hazardous waste hotline (1-800-552-2075), or the park office (703-729-0596).
  • Do not participate in careless activities that may endanger or distract park visitors.
  • Do not allow small children to accompany you.
  • Park personal vehicles in public parking areas only, DO NOT park on the trail or on private properties.
  • Avoid working in areas under repair or construction, especially during the operation of excavation, mowing, or other major equipment.
  • Never participate in trail work while under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol.
  • Report any problems or safety concerns immediately to the park office (703-729-0596).

If it's safe to do (i.e. does not require a prolonged presence out in the trail), removal down to the roots should be fine, but cutting at the base is perfectly acceptable.
